A Multi-Level Patio

The appeal of a multi-level patio can be the designated space for each outdoor living feature. Landscape experts often start with a patio as a foundational feature that sets the tone for the rest of the outdoor spaces. With the paver patio as the base, other elements can follow naturally based on your preferences for how you plan to use them.

Choosing pavers that match your house and other landscape features can create a cohesive aesthetic. Introduce more visual interest in the patio design with darker-toned pavers that make a border area that feels like a carpet defining the functional space. For example, having the outdoor kitchen and dining area on one level of the patio creates convenience when serving food and eating but bordering the outdoor dining can visually separate this area from where the food is prepared.

Retaining Walls

Stone retaining walls can further serve to define outdoor living spaces by separating functional spaces within the patio. Strategic retaining walls at seating height can also be used for casual seats for larger groups when you entertain, increasing your capacity to have space for everyone.

Retaining walls create dimension within an outdoor space with the vertical nature of the structure and the way contrasting wall stone can draw attention to the wall design. They make outdoor spaces feel cozier and more private while elevating a specific area with its own entry.

Outdoor Kitchen and Dining

Cooking for loved ones can take on new meaning when you are able to be part of the fun while preparing or heating the meal. Choosing the appliances and elements of the kitchen can be based on the number of people you plan to feed, how much space is available, and the size of the outdoor dining.

Outdoor dining space can be as crucial as plenty of cooking space since seating your guests together can be a fun way for them to connect. Placing the two spaces together makes setting up the meal or serving buffet-style a seamless process, ensuring everyone gets food and drinks easily.

Outdoor Fire Feature

Warmth and ambiance are guaranteed with an outdoor fire pit situated on the main patio or in another area of its own in the backyard. Connected by oversized stepping stones to the main patio when you choose for it to be a destination, a fire pit in the same pavers as the patio areas can feel connected but distinct.

Changing the wall stone color or texture can differentiate the fire pit from the other outdoor living spaces, drawing guests toward the warmth and ambient light with an appealing design. Whether a round, square, rectangular, or custom fire pit shape fits the space, this compelling feature can be the gathering place at the end of the night for roasting marshmallows and finishing on a sweet note.

About the Author

It was in the early 1970s that Phil Munro was introduced to the landscape industry. His dad, Don Munro, purchased a dump truck to deliver materials and install small landscape jobs when he had free time after work and on the weekends, and he’d bring Phil along with him. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the 1980s, Phil built on this experience to start Munro Landscaping in 1987. In 1991, he incorporated as Munro’s Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance. Over the years he developed many relationships with suppliers and builders, and the company experienced massive growth: It expanded the lawn division and started a landscape construction division in the ’90s.
