Paver Patterns

The patterns used and the shape chosen for your paver patio are what can set it apart from other patios you’ve seen. An unusual shape, such as a hexagon paver, can create a visually striking patio. Combine different colored pavers to enhance the geometric design and make a bold statement in your outdoor area.

Mixed Materials

Instead of sticking to a single type of paver, consider incorporating different materials into your patio design. Accent pavers could provide the border for a patio made of natural stone, to put interesting textures and visual contrast on display.

Vertical Gardens

Add a touch of greenery to your patio by incorporating vertical gardens. Have wall-mounted planters or trellises installed to create a vertical oasis. You can choose among a variety of plants, such as climbing vines or cascading flowers, to bring life and color to your patio space and a pergola. Vertical gardens not only save space but also provide privacy and improve air quality.

Fire Features

Integrate a fire feature into your paver patio to create a cozy and inviting ambiance. Whether it's a sleek fire pit or a built-in fireplace, the warmth and glow of a fire can extend your patio’s usability into the cooler months. Gather around the fire with friends and family, roast marshmallows, or simply enjoy the mesmerizing flames on a quiet evening.

Built-in Seating

Maximize your patio’s functionality by incorporating built-in seating. Constructing seating walls or benches provides comfortable seating options and adds a polished and cohesive look to your outdoor space. Enhance your comfort by adding cushions or outdoor pillows that complement the overall design of your patio.

Lighting Accents

Illuminate your paver patio with creative lighting solutions. Use ambient lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Consider installing hidden LED lights along the edges of your patio or under the seating walls to create a subtle glow. Incorporate pathway lights to guide guests and highlight the beauty of your patio design. Task lighting can extend the amount of time you can use the more functional areas of your landscape, such as the outdoor kitchen.

Water Features

Introduce the soothing sound of water into your patio design by incorporating a water feature. From a small fountain to a tranquil pond or a modern waterfall, various options suit different styles and preferences. Water features provide a calming effect and act as a focal point, enhancing the overall aesthetics of your patio.

Outdoor Kitchen

Take your patio to the next level by incorporating an outdoor kitchen. A well-designed cooking area with a grill, countertops, and storage will enhance your outdoor dining experience and make entertaining a breeze. Use pavers to create a functional and visually appealing kitchen space that seamlessly integrates with the rest of your patio design.

About the Author

It was in the early 1970s that Phil Munro was introduced to the landscape industry. His dad, Don Munro, purchased a dump truck to deliver materials and install small landscape jobs when he had free time after work and on the weekends, and he’d bring Phil along with him. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the 1980s, Phil built on this experience to start Munro Landscaping in 1987. In 1991, he incorporated as Munro’s Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance. Over the years he developed many relationships with suppliers and builders, and the company experienced massive growth: It expanded the lawn division and started a landscape construction division in the ’90s.
